The 3-Step Drain Tile Process
Installing modern drain tile is simpler than you might expect. The WM-FieldDrain farm drainage solution from PTx Trimble takes you through each step with guided workflows.
Survey the Field
Using your GFX display and NAV-960 or NAV-900 GNSS receiver, collect elevation points across the field or along specific planned tile lines. This creates the topographic map used to understand slope, elevation change and natural water flow. The system walks you through the survey process, whether mapping the entire field or focusing on known trouble spots for targeted drainage installation zones.
Design Tile Runs
With AutoSlope, the system uses key inputs like minimum depth, maximum depth, optimum depth, minimum slope and outlet depth to automatically create tile designs. Errors are flagged on screen so they can be addressed, and designs can be generated quickly even in complex fields. For more extensive designs, WM-Subsurface allows multi-line or full pattern layouts to be created and loaded directly back onto the display.
Install the Tile
A GNSS receiver on the plow controls tile depth automatically as you pull through the field. The display shows tractor position, tile placement and recommended adjustments in real time. Each tile line can also be used as a guidance line. With this setup, precise grade control is simple and predictable.
What You Need for Accurate Installation
High-accuracy GNSS positioning is essential because vertical error is twice as much as the horizontal error you may be more familiar with. RTK corrections are needed to ensure that tile is installed at the correct depth and slope.
A solid base station setup (such as with the R750 modular GNSS receiver), a clear view of the sky and minimal interference from large metal structures or high-powered electrical lines all help maintain precision.
Most growers already own other components needed to begin installing tile with WM-FieldDrain. The same PTx Trimble GNSS receiver used for guidance in the cab can be moved to the tile plow. A valve control module and hydraulic valve can be added for automated depth control.
WM-FieldDrain is compatible with many different water management setups. It can be used with direct mount plows, hitch mount plows, ditchers, trenchers and self-propelled machines. If you already use PTx Trimble equipment, you probably have a head start.
How WM-FieldDrain Makes DIY Tile Drainage Easy
DIY tile installation has never been more accessible. WM-FieldDrain simplifies complex engineering into clear steps and automated controls that guide operators from start to finish. With the combination of accurate survey data, automated tile designs and automatic grade control during installation, you can confidently install tile on your own without hiring the entire project out.
This creates opportunities to tile when the timing is right, add lines where needed and complete work at a pace suited to your operation. Even installing a few lines each year can compound into major improvements in field performance.
Tile drainage is one of the few investments that improves yields, protects soil and increases field efficiency year after year. With modern guidance and WM-FieldDrain, it is easier than ever to do it yourself.
